Consultative Engagement and Agile Integration within an External Development Team
Stepping out of the comfort zone: the experience of acting as a consulting designer integrated into an external development team to deliver a successful corporate product.
01 Overview
The Context: An invitation from a former partner to work on a portal project for a new corporate product. The company hired for development handled the engineering but lacked a dedicated design practice.
My Role: Product Designer / UI/UX acting in a consultative manner and integrated into an external development team, entirely outside standard internal processes.
The Impact: Breaking out of the professional comfort zone after years within the same structure, successfully aligning with routines and developers from another company through weekly meetings, and delivering a successful product.
"How to maintain UX methodological consistency when entering a corporate project running on processes and tools from a third-party team?"
02 The Challenge and Initial Scenario
For years, I built my career within a lean, close-knit, and highly predictable team:
The Usual Ecosystem: Although the company where I worked focused on IT consulting and system development (where design wasn't the core activity), our internal dynamics were extremely fluid and aligned, featuring consolidated processes and daily proximity with managers and devs.
Breaking the Routine: The turning point occurred when a former partner, at another organization, hired an external vendor to develop a product portal. Since this hired vendor had no designers, I was invited to lead the visual and experience front, working directly with a team of devs outside my own company.
Cross-Team Integration
Rapid alignment of processes and routines with an external development team, ensuring immediate synergy.
Consultative Vision & Adaptability
Technical and strategic flexibility to navigate dynamic corporate contexts and deliver consistent value.
03 Execution Outside the Comfort Zone
Integrating into a completely new operation required immediate flexibility:
Remote Alignment: We held initial scope alignment calls and established structured weekly routines with the end client and the developers from the other company.
Process Exchange: I quickly adapted to third-party tools, methodologies, and workflows, exercising the ability to defend design decisions before a technical team that didn't know me beforehand.
04 The Outcome
- Successfully Completed Delivery: The portal was developed and launched with excellence, proving that seniority translates into the ease of navigating different organizational cultures.
- Value Lesson (Soft Skills): The case highlights professional maturity: the technical and behavioral confidence required to collaborate end-to-end with external teams without losing quality rigor.
